The Quiet Strength of Self Control

In a world that often encourages us to follow every impulse, the Bible presents a different path: the path of self-control. Self-control is not about suppressing our personality or living under rigid rules; it is about allowing God's Spirit to guide our thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions. The need for self-control is evident in everyday life. We need it when we are tempted to respond in anger, when we face unhealthy habits, when worry threatens our peace, or when pride seeks to take centre stage. Self-control enables us to choose God's way rather than simply reacting to our circumstances
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22–23)
Notice that self-control is not something we achieve through willpower alone. It is the work of the Holy Spirit within us as we walk closely with Christ. The more we surrender to God, the more His character is reflected in our lives.
"Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city." (Proverbs 16:32)
According to Scripture, true strength is not measured by power over others but by the ability to govern ourselves under God’s authority.
"Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control." (2 Peter 1:5–6)
As followers of Christ, self-control helps us live lives that honour God and serve others well. It protects our relationships, strengthens our witness, and enables us to remain faithful when challenges arise. Our prayer is that through the leading of the Holy Spirit, we can exercise self-control in our thoughts, words and actions. We must learn to pause before reacting, choose wisdom over our impulses and reflect the character of Christ in all that we do. This is how the fruit of self-control can grow and flourish in our lives.
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7).
