God Alone: The source of Lasting Joy

I have often found myself chasing joy in places that seemed convincing at the time - moments of success, meaningful relationships, quiet accomplishments, or simply the hope that things would go well. And sometimes, they do bring a sense of happiness. For a while, life feels full, satisfying, even complete.

But I have also learned how quickly that feeling can fade. Circumstances change. Expectations are unmet. Things I once relied on no longer feel secure. And in those moments, I am reminded of something I am still learning deeply: true, lasting joy cannot be built on temporary things - it must come from God alone.

There is a kind of joy that runs deeper than circumstances, and Scripture points us to it again and again. The psalmist writes:

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

What strikes me is that joy is not something we create or achieve - it is found in God’s presence. It is not partial or fleeting, but full and enduring.

I have come to realise that when I distance myself from God, through busyness, distraction, or simply trying to manage everything on my own, I also lose sight of that deeper joy. But when I return, even quietly, even imperfectly, there is a renewed sense of assurance. Joy begins not in perfection, but in presence.

Jesus speaks into this so beautifully:

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)

This is a profound invitation: not just to experience joy occasionally, but to carry His joy within you, a joy that is whole, grounded, and rooted in relationship with Him.

There have been seasons in my life when things were far from easy, and yet I sensed a quiet strength within. It was not dependent on what was happening around me, but on a deeper confidence in who God is. Nehemiah captures this truth: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

This kind of joy sustains us. It strengthens us when we feel depleted, lifts us when we feel low, and steadies us when life feels uncertain.   If I am honest, I am still learning this. I still find myself drawn to surface-level happiness. But time and again, I am gently brought back to this truth: nothing compares to the deep, steady, life-giving joy that comes from resting in God.

Perhaps the invitation today is simple: to turn again to Him, to remain in His presence, and to allow His joy, not our circumstance, to shape our lives.
