How to keep hope alive…

I heard a great sermon recently about Hope and the bible verse: ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit’ (Romans 15:13), was drawn to our attention. It got me thinking about the ups and downs of life and how easy it is for a feeling of hopelessness to engulf us when going through trying times. Trusting God is the only sure way to find hope when all seems lost, because the hope that God gives is alive and secure, one that can bring us through the most difficult circumstances stronger than we ever were. Tough times do not last forever, but tough people do, and quite often emerge even tougher, better equipped to navigate any future hurdles life may throw at them.

One sure way to keep hope alive during tough times is to meditate on the promises of God. God promises to never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). He also assures us that all things, including all our trials will work together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). This means that there is often purpose in our difficulties, if we take time to seek God in the midst of them.

However long hopelessness may try to linger, also remember His promise that weeping and sorrow may endure ‘for a night’, but joy and rejoicing will surely come in the morning (Psalm 30:5). The peace that God gives us - even in the midst of seemingly hopeless situations - is able to surpass all understanding (Philippians 4:7). We just need to hold on.

When we meditate on God’s promises and remind ourselves of His faithfulness, we can begin to trust Him more fully and hope comes alive within us.
