Arise Into the light

Isaiah 60, verses 1-3 says:

‘Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.’

There are moments in life when the world can feel dim - personally, socially, or globally. Yet this powerful passage in Isaiah offers a timeless invitation: rise anyway, because God’s light has already risen upon you!

The imagery is striking. Darkness covers the earth; not just literal darkness, but the heaviness we experience through uncertainty, injustice, fear, or stagnation. But in the midst of that shadow, God announces a different reality for His people: a radiant light that breaks through, surrounds them, and draws others toward hope.

This light is not something we manufacture. It is something placed upon us. It is God-given, God-driven, and God-sustained. Our role is simply to arise and step into the identity and purpose God has already prepared.

What is even more compelling is the promise that follows: as God’s light shines on us, it becomes visible to others. Nations, communities, and individuals are drawn toward brightness when they see transformation, compassion, justice, and courage at work in our lives.

In a world that can feel increasingly uncertain, anxious and even dangerous at times, this passage reminds us that divine light is not diminished by surrounding darkness.  On the contrary, it becomes more noticeable because of it. And we, as bearers of that light, are called to be visible expressions of God’s hope.

So today, rise. Shine. Not because everything around you is perfect, but because God’s light is already with you, already in you, and already working through you. Your rising might be the spark someone else needs to find their way.  As it also says in Matthew 5:16: ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven’.
